As a student, one of my professors encouraged me to enter work into the upcoming Twelfth Annual Juried Exhibition at the Lyndon House in Athens, Georgia. This was the first I’d ever been exposed to juried art shows. I gained admission to that show, which was juried by Thomas M. Messer, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York City.
Three years later, while still a student, I was juried into the Fifteenth Annual Juried Exhibition by James T. Demetrion, Director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. Not only did I gain entrance into that show, but I received the Honorable Mention Award.
These two events have remained encouraging throughout my fledgling off-and-on-again career as an “Artist.” I find it interesting that we artists find it difficult to claim the title while stumbling haphazardly toward some semblance of that goal. I now claim that title quite comfortably. Yes, I am an Artist!
